EDEA boots are formable to your foot — but not the way most skate brands are. You never put them in an oven. Instead, our technicians heat only the specific area that needs adjusting, using a professional heat gun (1500–1800 watts). This targeted approach is used to relieve pressure points such as a Haglund's bump (runner's bump), bunions, a prominent 5th metatarsal, or sensitivity around the ankle and navicular bone. It's done only after foot alignment has already been addressed during your fitting — this is fine-tuning, not a full re-fit.

Rebuilding and Reinforcing EDEA Boots

At Maison du Patin, we also mod and rebuild EDEA boots. To reinforce or rebuild a boot, we place it in an oven for 10 minutes at 180°F, then open it up and add thermoplastic reinforcements — giving the skater the exact boot shape they want, with a personalized stiffness level (for example, a Concerto rebuilt with the support of an Ice Fly, or even a Piano). This is a highly specialized service that very few shops are equipped to offer, requiring skilled and knowledgeable boot technicians.

Why EDEA Boots Can Be Custom-Shaped

A standard "C" width boot can be narrowed or widened to fit anywhere from an "AAAA" to an "EEE" width — without adding or removing any material. Because feet change over time, a boot can simply be re-shaped again whenever needed. EDEA's thermoformable construction allows technicians to pinch, punch, widen, and narrow the shell without compromising its structural integrity, as many times as necessary, as long as it's heated correctly.

Here's how it works: the custom shaping is achieved by manipulating the thermoformable material in the boot's structure. This carbon-type material becomes soft and pliable once it reaches 140–180°F. Different techniques apply depending on the goal:

• Widening — using tracings of your feet and shoe lasts
• Narrowing — using the lace-locking system built into EDEA boots, combined with foot tracings, for a snugger fit
• Ankle and heel adjustments — using specialized punches of varying sizes and shapes

Once the material cools, it holds its new shape until heated again — which is why we recommend never storing EDEA boots near a heat source (like a car on a hot day), as this can cause the shape to shift. If that happens, the boot can always be reshaped back.

Where can EDEA boots be shaped?

Anywhere the heat-moldable shell is present — the toe box, heel pocket, and the area around the ankle and navicular bone. The one exception is the EDEA Roller Boots (Classica and Flamenco Soft), where the thermoformable shell stops just below the ankle.

How long does it take?

Depending on how much shaping is needed, the process takes 45 minutes to 2 hours — most of that time is cooling. The boot must be completely cool before trying it on; a warm boot can shift out of shape, meaning the process has to start over.

How does this compare to traditional leather boots?

This goes far beyond traditional heat molding, which only softens the padding inside an oven-heated boot and often needs repeating over time. EDEA boots use memory-foam padding, similar to a mattress — but what actually changes shape is the boot's own structure, not just the cushioning. That's exactly why we never use an oven on EDEA boots: it softens the entire structure in a way that can damage the carbon-type material. Instead, we rely on heat guns, shoe lasts, and specialized tools to shape precisely the areas that need it.
